frequently asked questions
What is mindful art?
It is a type of art therapy where the process is as important as the finished product. It is allowing yourself to be creative in order to find peace, de-stress and explore your feelings.
Activities that we will do during the workshop (journaling, photography, doodling, listening to music) can be part of a mindful art practice and help our overall wellbeing.
How is it helpful for teenage girls?
Middle school is a tough time for girls. Our emotions change dramatically and our self-esteem becomes more fragile. But listening to music and other practices of self-expression can foster a positive mental health journey and help us learn more about ourselves as well as understand our feelings.
Why did you create this workshop?
Last year I was feeling very stressed about school. I started using a disposable film camera when I was hanging out with my friends and discovered that when I took photos I felt much better. Since I love Taylor Swift I began to take photos inspired by her music. I realized that being creative is important to me. With this workshop I wanted to share my experience with the hopes that other girls find activities that help them explore and manage their emotions.
How long is the workshop and what will we do?
The workshop is 3 hours. It is divided into 3 sections. During the first hour we will listen to songs, analyze them and do some journaling/doodling. During the second portion we will plan a series of photos inspired by the songs and then go outside (weather permitting) to take pictures. We will finish by designing an album cover and discussing how we can apply these activities at home, based on our individual interests.
What songs will we listen to?
I will select a few Taylor Swift songs for the initial exercises (I try to pick one from each album) but you can use your own favorite songs as inspiration.
Do you need to be a Taylor Swift fan to participate?
While we hope to turn you into a Taylor Swift fan, you don't have to be one. The idea is to learn how to use music as a way to de-stress, learn about yourself and explore your creativity.
Do you have to be an artist to participate?
Not at all. You don't even have to show your work if you don't want to. This is about experimenting, relaxing, being creative and having fun while listening to Taylor's music.
Should I bring my camera or phone to take photos?
You can. But it might be fun to experiment with a film camera, which will be provided to you.
What else should I bring?
Check the forecast because, weather permitting, we will go outside for about 30 minutes to take photos. Make sure you dress appropriately.
Where do we develop the disposable camera we use during your workshop?
While you can use stores like CVS to develop your photos, I like supporting local businesses like Bellows Film Lab at 1702 N. Damen. And please make sure you share your developed photos with me! I'd love to see your work.
Do you do parties?
This is a super fun activity to do with your friends so let me know if you are interested in hosting a TS party.
